Ivy Cottage, 18c Dingle Road, Pedmore is the last property available in this meticulously re-developed Gentlemen’s Residence that was originally built in the 1920s and sits on one of Stourbridge’s most sought-after roads and is surrounded by professional neighbours.

The History Behind Dingle Court

Oak Lodge is a fine example of an inter-war individually built home, general referred to as a ‘Gentleman’s Residence’. This was the first house to be built in Dingle Road, while it was still know as New Road. The land was acquired from the Old Swinford Hospital Charity that was founded by the will of Thomas Foley (1616-1677) dated 27th January 1671, by the Edwards family, local business people.

The Foley family is one of the most important families in the history of Stourbridge. From their iron forges and mills powered by water on the River Stour and other rivers and streams, the Foley family built up substantial fortunes which were supplemented by marriages into wealth and influential families. Thomas Foley was said to be so impressed by a sermon given by the Puritan divine Richard Baxter on the proper use of wealth that he immediately founded a charity school for poor boys, the now much acclaimed Old Swinford Hospital School, and one of the most impressive architectural features of Stourbridge. Virtually the whole of Pedmore was set aside by Foley to form part of the endowment for his school.

The sale of the land, by Paul Henry Foley, a descendant of Thomas Foley to build Oak Lodge, was used to enhance this charity. It was sold for £276-7 shillings on 12th September 1924.

Captain Edwards and his family lived in the house for 50 years, before it was sold in the 1980s.

Oak Lodge is a classic Arts & Crafts house which has retained its architectural integrity with qualities that exemplify this distinguished period. The Arts & Crafts Movement, founded by William Morris, sought, in the face of grim industrialisation in the 19th Century, to create new and more beautiful environments in which people might live and delight in fine craftsmanship wrought with intrinsically attractive building materials.
